ON ERRORS AND THE NECESSITY OF REFINING THE CALCULATION OF PAVEMENTS FOR FROST RESISTANCE

Abstract

The territory of the Russian Federation is characterized by significant differences in the conditions of soil freezing. The design of both rigid and flexible road pavements is carried out in accordance with various regulatory documents, but their testing for resistance to frost heaving is unified. The existing approach to testing the pavement for frost resistance is a greatly reduced version of the calculation according to the previously valid regulatory documents. In addition, when calculating road pavements for areas with seasonal freezing of the structure of more than 2.0 m, incorrect results are obtained, which are expressed in a reduction in the required thickness of the pavement (frost protection layer) in comparison with cases with a shallow freezing depth. The article describes the differences in testing for frost resistance according to the previously existing and modern regulatory methodology for the design of road pavements, provides an analysis of the results obtained when calculating road pavements according to the modern regulatory method, and gives suggestions for eliminating the shortcomings when calculating according to the criterion of frost resistance to ensure more reliable and reliable design solutions.
